Sweden : Swedish Skanska to extend Prague metro

Swedish construction and civil engineering group Skanska said Thursday it had won a contract worth 3.7 billion Czech koruna (153 million euros, $223 million) to extend the Prague underground train system.

"Skanska has been awarded a construction contract in connection with the extension of the Prague subway amounting to 3.7 billion koruna," the company said in a statement.

Prague's A metro line is being extended with four more stations, or about six kilometres (3.7 miles), Skanska said, adding it had been engaged to handle the technical part of the construction.

That "includes building the energy installations and equipping the subway system with air conditioning, low voltage and communication system," it said, adding "Skanska will start the work immediately and the work will be completed by autumn 2014."

Skanska's division in the Czech Republic is that country's largest construction group, employing some 5,600 people there and in neighbouring Slovakia.
